Developed by Dr. Alwin Lewis and featured in his book, “Why Weight Around” this diet has sparked several discussions among diet experts because of its rapid weight loss advantages and its risks and noticeable disadvantages as well. According to Dr. Lewis, going on this diet is similar to having the meal plan of a patient undergoing gastric surgery. The actual application of it is challenging and takes willpower but many dieters are convinced by its results.

For this diet, you will basically be taking only five bites for each of your meals and your meal is only limited to lunch and dinner. One unique aspect of this diet plan is that breakfast consists of only a calorie-free drink, such as black coffee, together with one multivitamin (any good multi vitamin will be fine!). This is unlike most other eating plans that advocate breakfast as a highly important meal. Dr. Lewis states that the body is currently in a fasting state when you wake up and maintaining this for as long as you can encourages the body to get rid of belly fat.

You also need to make sure that each bite you take is of the right size. Any bite that requires you to swallow twice is already too big of a bite. Your lunch will be five bites of any food you choose. Dinner is the same, consisting of five bites of any food. Dr. Lewis suggests, however, a variety of food such as proteins, carbohydrates and vegetables for you to get the nutrients needed by your body. It’s important to drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. If you’re drinking calorie-free beverages, you can also drink as much as you want.


Many dieters find themselves quitting their diets because they gave in to their cravings for specific foods from time to time. The five bite diet is a variation of fasting, however, and you will still need willpower and determination not to over-eat. There are several flaws to this 5 bite diet; the first of which is that it’s not an eating plan for teaching healthy eating habits and it’s not recommended in the long run. This diet is meant to help you quickly lose weight and once you achieve your desired weight, you should return to a regular eating routine. But once you return to your usual eating pattern, there’s a higher likelihood of regaining the pounds you’ve lost previously. Another concern is that even if you take a multivitamin everyday, your body will still be lacking in nutrients which will adversely affect your overall health.

It’s not the best diet for sustaining a healthy weight permanently but if you just need to shed some pounds quickly, this diet will aid you in doing that.
